Hotel combined with apartments in Portugal
The new B&B (Bed & Breakfast) in Guimarães, with 95 rooms and 44 studio apartments, represents a leading example of the new way in sustainable and environmentally friendly construction near the University of Minho. It is the first hybrid construction building on the Iberian Peninsula using engineered wood and only a 1/3 concrete of a traditional building.
All main timber elements remain exposed to create an unmatched user experience. The hybrid-slab elements as well as the façade panels with attached load-bearing glulam columns are fully prefabricated in the shop. This allows for a quick and reliable installation on the construction site. Once the wall elements and the floor panels are in place, the building is air- & vapor-tight as well as protected from rain – allowing the follow-up trades to commence their work sooner compared to traditional construction.
Architect Mário Fernandes designed the two 4-storey CREE buildings with an area of around 4,100 m2 (44,000 sq.ft.) rising from two base levels of reinforced concrete creating a total floor area of 7,200 m2 (77,500 sq.ft.). The first stone was laid in February 2022 and the building will be completed one year after.
